Paffett: 2012 was greatest frustration

Gary Paffett says his 2012 DTM title defeat was painfully frustrating given that he felt it was his best ever season-long performance. The HWA Mercedes driver narrowly missed out on claiming a second title when BMW's Bruno Spengler pulled back a 40-point mid-season deficit to win the Hockenheim finale and the championship

2012 mistakes now behind, says Perez

Sergio Perez is adamant the messy end to his Sauber career is now behind him and will not impact on his debut with McLaren. The Mexican found himself on the receiving end of criticism at the tail end of 2012 when, after signing for new team McLaren, he failed to score a point for his old outfit Sauber in the final six races of the season. And although he is adamant that his disappointing run of form had nothing to do with the increased pressure that came with his step up to McLaren, he says that he did not take the situation lightly

Report: Honda Urban SUV Concept leaks out ahead of Detroit debut

Next up on the 2013 Detroit Auto Show embargo-break-a-palooza: the Honda Urban SUV Concept. Thanks to Indian Autos Blog, we now have the first press shots of the small crossover concept - a vehicle that will someday make it to production, riding on the Honda Fit platform.

It may have some big features - namely, the large headlamps, big wheels, and bold body lines - but the Urban SUV Concept will compete with smaller vehicles like the Nissan Juke or Fiat 500L. Indian Autos Blog reports that both 1.6- an 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines are being speculated for use in the production model, as well as a diesel powerplant for foreign markets.

That's all we know for now, but stay tuned to see the full smattering of official images and details as part of this week's Detroit coverage.

Brabham would welcome GT return

The Le Mans 24 Hours winner raced a HPD for privateer team JRM in the World Endurance Championship last year with Peter Dumbreck and Karun Chandhok. Plato vindicated by success with MG

Jason Plato believes that the success of his 2012 British Touring Car season with MG more justified his decision to leave tin-top powerhouse RML. Plato took his second BTCC crown with the RML-run works Chevrolet team in 2010 , but left Ray Mallock's outfit last winter to front MG's first factory assault on the championship. After winning the opening race of the season in an MG6 that was developed at short notice, he took the championship fight to the Hondas of Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal down to the final round of the season.

Official: Lotus announces race-ready Exige V6 Cup and Cup R

Lotus Exige V6 Cup R

Lotus has pulled off the wraps on two new versions of the Exige: the V6 Cup and the V6 Cup R. Based on the Exige S, the V6 Cup is built to be a dual-purpose street and track machine. The 0-60 dash should take just under 3.8 seconds thanks to a full 345 horsepower from a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. Weighing in at 2,380 pounds, the V6 Cup should be an absolute riot to drive, and with a full FIA-approved roll cage, fire extinguisher and six-point race harnesses on board, it's plenty safe, too. Two-way adjustable dampers are standard, as are AP Racing four-piston calipers on all four corners. More importantly, drivers can expect to find the Lotus Dynamic Performance Management system in the cockpit, complete with Touring, Sport and DPM Off modes.

The V6 Cup R, meanwhile, is both lighter and offers more horsepower than the standard V6 Cup. The same blown V6 dishes out 366 horsepower in R trim, and the whole contraption tips the scales at 2,292 pounds. Of course, the same spate of race hardware is stock, minus the DPM system. A lightweight battery, track-spec tow loops and quick-release engine cover help separate the Cup R from its more civil sibling, as do performance brake pads and better oil and water cooling systems.

Check out the brief press release below for more information. Both of the new models are headed for a debut at the 2013 Autosport International Show.

Report: Wired: Ford making Sync AppLink open source, free for any automaker to use

Ford Sync AppLink

Automakers aren't necessarily known for their sharing skills unless some sort of mutual agreement is in place, but it seems that Ford is looking to create a universal architecture based on its Sync AppLink on which other companies (including rival automakers) can run in-car apps free of charge. With the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show going on, Wired sat down with Ford's Doug VanDagens, director of connected services, who talked about what such a tech-sharing plan could do for Ford and the industry.

Giving up some of the technology behind Sync AppLink would obviously put Ford in a place to become a bigger name in cabin tech, but on the grander scheme of things, it could help bring more apps to users. Currently, each automaker uses its own technologies, which means that creating an app for each system would be expensive and time consuming - a reason why current in-car apps are limited to bigger names like Pandora and iHeart Radio. Ford's plan would not only make it easier for app developers and automakers, it would also open the door for more aftermarket head units to improve infotainment capabilities as well.

When asked by Autoblog, a Ford rep at CES said that while other automakers could potentially use their open-source software, Ford didn't necessarily expect it to happen.

To get the full boatload of details about Ford's proposed tech-sharing plan, head on over to Wired.

The traveling circus of motorcycles, cars, four-wheelers, massive support trucks, buggies, and sunburned Europeans will wend their way from Lima, Peru, to Santiago, Chile, by way of Argentina. Formerly the Paris-to-Dakar rally, this [...]

Audi Gets License to Test Autonomous Cars on Public Roads [2013 CES]

The vision of cars driving themselves is old hat. For decades, engineers and visionaries have promised that the autonomous car isn’t too far off. For the tech geeks among us, it’s a dream that’s nearing closer to reality with every day; others will see it as the death of driving as we know it. Whatever [...]

Video: Jeep Wrangler gets the wide-track treatment

When we read the tip about a Gulf-state diplomat in Rabat, Morocco who had supposedly "merged two Jeep Wranglers," we figured the two off-roaders were somehow linked front-to-back. Oh no. As you can see in the image above, taken from video of that vehicle actually traveling down the road and needing more than one lane to do it, the two Jeeps were put together side-by-side.

The seriously widebody truck is said to have six wheels, one at each corner and two in the middle. That's about all anyone seems to know about it at the moment, and that's probably enough - in these situations you know better than to ask why, just watch the video below.

Aprilia: MotoGP can win factories back

Aprilia believes that MotoGP has a 'big chance' to seize upon its recent structural changes and attract more manufacturers back into the sport. The Italian manufacturer has not had a prototype presence in MotoGP since 2004, when it finished sixth in the constructors' championship, despite dominating the 250cc category with Jorge Lorenzo in 2006 and '07. Aprilia has played down hopes it could return to the sport over the past few years, recently blaming the ever-changing rules of the sport's premier class for its continuing absence

Global Gouging: A Survey of Fuel Prices Around the World

In spite of increasing domestic oil production, four-dollar-per-gallon gasoline remains an on-again/off-again reality in the United States. That?s because oil and gas are global commodities, and the U.S. market isn?t as insular as we might like. The prices we pay, however, still stand out as cheap. Most of our global neighbors see fuel prices at [...]

Opinion: The good news and the bad news about December car sales

The holiday season saw Santa leave some nice gifts for the industry.

Pop the champagne, don't spare the caviar. The New Year has begun with a bang. Or, more precisely, the old year ended with one, December car sales delivering a much-needed boost to an auto industry still feeling the cold chill of its worst downturn since the Great Depression.

And the last-minute push past partisan gridlock that avoided an economic meltdown (can we all now abandon last year's tired cliché, "fiscal cliff"?) suggests that 2013 will maintain momentum. By most estimates, we'll see new vehicle sales surge somewhere into the low to mid-15 million range this year, and a new forecast by RL Polk predicts we could be looking at volumes of 16 million by mid-decade.

That's great news. At least it should be if you work for an automotive company or supplier or have some auto shares in your stock portfolio. If you're a car buyer, well, the story might not be so bright. Here's why it all depends on where you are in the consumer food chain.

Let's look at it from the industry perspective for a moment. The holiday season saw Santa leave some nice gifts for the industry. A long line of brands, including Nissan, Audi, Porsche, Subaru, Hyundai and Jeep, set all-time records last year. Bankrupt barely three years earlier, Chrysler Group wrapped up a string of 33 consecutive monthly sales gains.

While Toyota could claim Camry as the best-selling passenger car in the US, Ford could counter with the world's number one seller in the form of the Ford Focus, while the F-Series again topped the overall US sales chart. And Ford's Blue Oval was the only brand to top the 2 million mark in the US last year.

Fernando Alonso: 2012 in quotes

Many have hailed Fernando Alonso as the driver of the 2012 Formula 1 season, taking a car that was demonstrably not the fastest to within a few points of the world championship.
